Vasil Madzhirski

Urban planner – sustainable development
Part of KOMPONENTA team since January 2023. His role in the company is to carry out research and analysis, propose methodological guidelines, elaborate concepts, action plans and strategies for development of urban areas. The focus of his professional interests is in the field of sustainable urban mobility, public spaces, interactions between urban structure and mobility patterns.
*
Master in Urbanism, PhD in "Territorial and Landscape Planning and Urban Planning"

Vasil graduated with a Master’s degree in Urbanism in 2009 and in 2022 he defended his dissertation on “The contribution of intermodal transport nodes to the formation of urban public space” at the Department of Urban Planning of UACEG, Sofia. He has been on doctoral exchanges at the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning of the Vienna University of Technology and the Centre for Mobility and Spatial Planning at Ghent University. In his professional career, he gained diverse experience in public administration, private consultancy and design sector, civil sector, academia and research. Since 2020, he has been taking part as a visiting lecturer every semester at UACEG.

The opportunity to work on integrated urban transport projects in the major cities of Bulgaria at the beginning of his professional career determined his interest in mobility, which he developed later. He recognises integrated planning processes as sustainable and believes that they should be based on evidence-based approaches. These processes should involve all stakeholders, and bottom-up participatory approaches have an important contribution to a meaningful urban life.

Since 2015 he has been a member of the Management Board of the Union of Bulgarian Spatial Planners, and since November 2022 he has been one of the Managers of “Na otkrito” foundation.
