Miglena Gerasimova

Manager
Miglena is the co-founder of KOMPONENTA. She is in charge of process and project management and business development. She is also involved in the expert work as a strategic planning specialist. With her vast academic and research experience, in addition to her facilitation skills, she has had a leading role in creating methodologies and approaches for KOMPONENTA’s current projects.

Miglena is an urban planner and a sociologist. In 2009 she graduated with a degree in Urbanism in from the University of Architecture, Civil engineering and Geodesy with specializations in strategic planning in Russia (St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Construction) and Austria (Technical University of Wien). After several years working as a planner and an urban planning consultant, she devoted herself to activist work in the NGO sector, in the field of urban planning and sustainable development. Later on this experience led her to research work in the field of urban studies and citizen participation in urban development processes. 

In 2018, Miglena defended her PhD at St. Kliment Ohridski University’s Department of Sociology under the Urban Studies Program. She followed two specializations in Poland (Jagiellonian University, Krakow) and Brazil (Universidade de São Paulo). As an urban sociologist she worked on various research topics related to sustainable urban development and the place of people in this process. Miglena continued her academic work in Bulgarian and international research projects and worked with students in Bulgaria and Brazil. 

In 2017, she specialized as a strategic planning expert as part of the Vision for Sofia team where she organized and coordinated the research process related to the Sociology, People and Identity and Culture themes. She continued to work on important strategic documents for Sofia municipality with as part of Sofiaplan’s team until the end of 2021. In parallel, she worked with other smaller municipalities such as the Municipality of Gabrovo, assisting them in their strategic planning processes. 

Currently, Miglena is the Managing Director and co-founder of KOMPONENTA, Company for Urban Alternatives, Mediation and Analysis. She is also a co-founder of the ‘Toplocentrala’ Association and a member of the Laboratory for Urban Development, as well as a co-founder and member of the ‘Sineva 2020’ Community Centre, Sinemorets Village and the Urban Policies Association. 

Miglena is a certified mediator under the Mediation Act in Bulgaria, registered with the Ministry of Justice with No.: MR003023.
